Reading and evaluating a manifest is the single most important skill in liquidation reselling. A manifest is your window into exactly what's in a pallet before you buy it — and knowing how to interpret one is the difference between profitable purchases and expensive mistakes.

What's on a Manifest?

• Item description: Full product name and specifications
• Brand: Manufacturer (Apple, Samsung, Dyson, etc.)
• Model/SKU: Specific model identifier — essential for resale research

• Condition: Customer return, open-box, overstock, damaged

How to Evaluate a Manifest in 5 Steps

1. Count items: Note the total number of items — this determines your average cost per item
2. Add up retail value: Sum the retail prices — this is your total manifest retail value
3. Research resale values: For the top 10-15 highest-value items, check eBay "Sold" listings for actual selling prices
4. Estimate sell-through: Assume 60-80% of items will be sellable depending on conditions listed
5. Calculate ROI: (Estimated total resale revenue) ÷ (Pallet cost + shipping) = Your ROI multiple

Manifest Red Flags

• No model numbers: Vague descriptions like "electronics item" make research impossible
• All "damaged" condition: If every item is marked damaged, expect high non-functional rate
• Inflated retail prices: Compare listed retail prices to actual Best Buy current prices
• Low item count: Fewer items means each one must be more valuable to justify the pallet cost

Manifest Green Flags

• Specific model numbers: "Dyson V15 Detect SV47" is much better than "vacuum cleaner"
• Mix of conditions: "Open-box" and "overstock" alongside returns means some items are near-new
• Recognizable brands: Apple, Samsung, Dyson, KitchenAid = strong resale value
• Multiple high-value items: 2-3 items over $500 retail can make the entire pallet profitable
